  • The Battle of Antietam was the culmination of the Maryland Campaign of 1862, Lee wanted to keep the offensive and secure Southern independence through victory in the North; influence the fall mid-term elections; obtain much needed supplies; move the war out of Virginia, possibly into Pennsylvania; and to liberate Maryland, a Union state, but a slave-holding border state divided in its sympathies. Now the war had a dual purpose of preserving the Union and ending slavery. Causes of Battle

  • The Union Claims Victory The battle ended to be without a winner since so many soldiers ended up getting killed. Finally this ended up to be a win for Lincoln to issue the preliminary to the Emancipation Proclamation.

The bloodiest one day battle in American history. Soldiers lost: 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. Consequences
  • It halted southern efforts to press Lincoln to sue for peace. It was a critical northern victory which allowed Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. The issue of the Emancipation Proclamation probably kept France and England out of the war.
